Overview:

Rezum is a minimally invasive treatment for the urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or an enlarged prostate. It utilizes the thermal energy from water vapor to effectively shrink excess prostatic tissue. It works by delivering small amounts of steam through the urethra to the prostate in short intervals.

Rezum is designed to relieve uncomfortable BPH symptoms such as:

  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Slow urination
  • Urgency at night
  • Stopping and starting during urination
  • Bladder fullness after urination
  • Frequent urinary tract infections

What to Expect:

Rezum is a quick and simple treatment that generally takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on the size of the prostate. During the procedure, a special catheter device is inserted into the urethra under general anesthetic. Radiofrequency energy is applied to the water inside the device to create vapor or steam, which is then injected into the large prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow. This process safely and effectively destroys excess prostate tissue and initiates cell death within those tissues.

Following the procedure, the prostate will be swollen and irritated. Urinary symptoms are typically improved within a few weeks as the body needs time to break down and absorb the freshly destroyed prostatic tissue.
